Dear Editor,
Tyrone S Reid’s article of July 20 regarding the Flat Bridge divers is a tribute to the hard work and dedication of ordinary citizens performing an extraordinary task.
My family makes trips across the bridge almost weekly to visit friends and relatives in Linstead and Bog Walk. Often the driver becomes slightly discombobulated before crossing the bridge. It is reassuring to know if our vehicle falls over, there are people to come to our rescue.
Flat Bridge is an impressive feat of engineering that parallels some of the most popular bridges in the world. Its exceptional design synchronises with nature, surrounded by picturesque landscape. This unique beauty should not be compromised, not to mention its income potential as a tourist attraction.
What is needed is a system in place to forewarn drivers of the road conditions, and the necessary personnel, including bridge divers, to assist motorists and pedestrians.
Eventually, enterprising individuals will see the income potential of the region and implement the necessary measures to ensure the safety of their customers.
It would be beneficial to everyone if the government were to pay the Flat Bridge divers a decent wage for their life-saving efforts.
