Pastor pleads for road repairs

The Editor, Sir: I write this letter on behalf of the residents of Stony Hill, Port Antonio, Portland, and the adjoining communities for immediate assistance as it relates to the deplorable condition of the roads, if they can still be called 'roads'. Several attempts have been made by the residents, including a peaceful demonstration, and the condition remains the same and even worse. I had dialogue and even wrote a letter to the councillor of the Bound-brook Division, Councillor Rowland, but to no avail. The road should not stay in this deplorable condition and it is currently becoming a developed community. If these so-called 'roads' remain in the current condition, then soon or later, not even a donkey will be able to trod these paths, much less the cart. Neglected for too long I was told recently by a councillor that the National Solid Waste Management Authoriity is responsible for these roads. These so-called rural roads have been too long neglected. I must publicly say that I am disappointed with those in authority at how the people are treated in this community of which I am currently doing pastoral ministry. It is costing us to travel on these roads; even some taxis refuse to traverse them. Persons with vehicles have to spend much money repairing their vehicles at regular intervals. I hope the relevant individuals, agency or institution will surprise this community by repairing these roads with immediate effect. I, therefore, appeal to the mayor and staff of the Portland Parish Council, Councillor Dexter Row-land, National Works Agency, member of Parliament, Dr Donald Rhodd, to assist in responding to this request. God bless. I am, etc., Rev ROBERT A. PHILLIPS robphill_tareq@yahoo.com Port Antonio P O, Portland
