Fern Gully to be temporarily closed to Vehicular Traffic

The National Works Agency (NWA) is advising the public that the Fern Gully main road in St. Ann will be closed to vehicular traffic on Thursday, July 12, 2012, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. The closure is to facilitate the relocation of poles by the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPSCo.). The poles are located in the path of the U-drain being constructed under Phase 3 of the Fern Gully Rehabilitation Project.

During the closure, the alternative routes will be Breadnut Hill for vehicles entering and exiting Ocho Rios, and the Chalky Hill main road for large trucks and vehicles travelling westerly from Moneague to St. Anns Bay and beyond.

The 1.6 kilometers concrete drain is being built by the NWA as a major plank of the plan to mitigate flooding in the resort town of Ocho Rios. Four bridges are also being built as part of the plan. The Agency has substantially completed a 1.4 kilometers stretch of concrete pavement, which forms phase two of the rehabilitative works, which are being undertaken at a cost of over 600 million dollars.

Motorists using the Fern Gully main road are being reminded to obey the instructions of flag persons and posted warning signs.
