Motorists using the Junction main road in St. Mary are being advised to expect delays, in the vicinity of the community of Chovey, this Saturday, August 11 and Sunday, August 12, 2012, between the hours of 8:00 am and 5:00 pm. These delays will be as a result of work to remove a massive tree close to the roadway. The tree is being removed to facilitate ongoing works in relation to the reconstruction of the Westmoreland Bridge, as a part of the Jamaica Development Infrastructure Programme (JDIP). The bridge was destroyed during the passage of Tropical Storm Gustav in 2008.

Through the JDIP a new structure is being erected. The new bridge comprises six spans and will be 180 metres long with a concrete deck. On completion, it will be able to accommodate two lanes of traffic and two sidewalks for pedestrian use. Approximately 140 metres of gabion protective works are also to be done within the channel of the Wag Water River, as part of the project.

The 18 months project is being done at a cost of just under US$13.5 million and is expected to be completed in August 2013.

In the meantime, motorists who will be using the Junction road on Saturday and Sunday are being advised to obey posted warning signs and the directions of flag persons.
