NWA Advises Temporary Restriction of Bridge Use by Heavy Duty Vehicles

The National Works Agency (NWA) is advising that effective today, Thursday, November 05, 2015 the Cane Side River Bridge, along East Palm Avenue and the vicinity of Smatt Road in Port Antonio, Portland, is restricted for use by only small vehicles. Operators of heavy duty vehicles should therefore not use this bridge.

Stephen Shaw, Manager, Communication and Customer Services at the National Works Agency says the restriction has become necessary as the load bearing capacity of the bridge is compromised. Mr. Shaw says the restriction is indefinite and truckers should use the proposed alternative route.

Truckers travelling towards Breastworks from the direction of Folly, should use Allan Avenue, Smatt Road, then onto East Palm Avenue above the bridge and then onto Breastworks.

The reverse obtains for Truckers travelling from the direction of Breastworks towards Folly.

Truckers are advised to obey the posted warning and directional signs located at the approaches to the bridge.
