The National Works Agency (NWA) will be undertaking comprehensive tests on the soil beneath the Burnt Ground main road in Hanover. The road which is part of the corridor from Shettlewood to Mackfield is slated for rehabilitation, with some preliminary work already completed.

Community Relations Officer for the NWA’s Western Region, Janel Ricketts, says that the soil tests are meant to ensure that the users of this road get maximum value from the near 20 million dollars to be spent to improve the condition of the roadway.

The state of the corridor was recently the source of a demonstration by residents. The section of road has been in a state of disrepair; however, a contract is now in effect along the corridor. The protest action was staged on the day that repairs were slated to commence on the project.

Ms Ricketts explains that some equipment work has already been done, but indications are that underground water might be impacting the quality of the road in the area, hence the need for soil investigations. These investigations are expected to last for 1 week. It is expected that the rehabilitative works will resume as soon as the results are confirmed, and a plan of action formalized.

The project Burnt Ground Road Project involves the removal of soft spots, the scarifying and reshaping of sections of the roadway, the construction of additional drainage features and resurfacing using Asphaltic Concrete.

The project is expected to be completed by February 2024.
