Temporary Closure of the Pear Tree River Main Road to Facilitate Bridge Construction

The National Works Agency (NWA) is advising motorists and pedestrians that the roadway leading to the Pear Tree River community, St. Thomas, will be closed for six months, effective tomorrow, Thursday, September 17, 2015.

This temporary closure of the roadway is to facilitate demolition of the old bridge and the start of construction of the new structure. The new bridge will be approximately 30 metres in length and span two abutments. It will be constructed in the location of the existing bridge alignment. The demolished old bridge will be carted as scrap and disposed of at an approved waste management site.

A detour road has been constructed adjacent to the bridge construction site to allow for the movement of traffic and pedestrians during the temporary closure of the roadway.

Construction works commenced in early September and are scheduled to be completed in six months. The $49.5 million contract is awarded to Alcar Construction and Haulage Company Limited.

The NWA is also advising motorists and pedestrians to obey all posted warning signs and the instructions of flag persons during the construction works.
