Traffic Changes for Three Miles

Date Published:

Effective today, May 9, 2018, the National Works Agency (NWA) will prohibit right turns, from Marcus Garvey Drive, at the Three Miles intersection. The change is to facilitate road rehabilitation works that are now underway, at Three Miles in Kingston, as part of the Hagley Park Road Improvement project. This change will be maintained throughout the construction period.

Manager, Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw, says that motorists travelling from Marcus Garvey Drive towards Three Miles will no longer be allowed to make a right turn onto Spanish Town Road. U-turns will also not be allowed. He says that persons travelling from Marcus Garvey Drive or the Causeway, wishing to access Spanish Town Road, can travel easterly along Marcus Garvey Drive and use East Avenue to do so.

Additionally, the concrete median and traffic signal poles in the vicinity of the gas station, at Three Miles, will be removed to allow the two right turning lanes travelling from the direction of Six Miles onto Marcus Garvey Drive to be received unhindered. The works in the area have resulted in one of the receiving lanes being partially blocked, effectively reducing the carriagway to single lane. Persons travelling towards Hagley Park Road from the direction of Marcus Garvey Drive will continue to be accommodated in two through lanes.

Mr. Shaw is reminding road users who regularly use the Three Miles area to plan their travels over the next several months, as the area will continue to be an active work zone and traffic delays are likely to occur. The NWA will continue to assess the traffic situation as the construction progresses and modifications will be made as deemed necessary.

Under the Hagley Park Road Improvement Project, approximately 3.7 kilometres of roadway, between Maxfield Avenue and Portia Simpson Miller Square is being widened. The number of available lanes will move from two to four and will also see the construction of two overpass bridges, the installation of sidewalks and drains, and the improvement and signalisation of several intersections. The project is slated to be completed within 18 months.
