The National Works Agency (NWA) is undertaking a major effort to repair roadways, across the parish of St. James, which have been severely undermined by successive flood events. Approximately $120 million has been devoted to this effort through the Government of Jamaica’s Island-wide Repair to Scoured and Damaged Roads Programme.
Community Relations Officer for the NWA’s Western Region, Janel Ricketts, says that currently twelve critical roadways are being targeted. The roadways represent a mix of parochial and main roads. Among the parochial roads being targeted are Hart Boulevard and the Branch Hall roadway. The main roads from Barnett to Adelphi and from Johns Hall to Springfield are also being targeted under the programme.
The projects, which are at varying stages of completion, involve repairs to the worst affected sections of the targeted corridors. Generally, the projects involve drainage and base improvements, and the resurfacing of the targeted sections of the roadway.
Ms Ricketts says that, over the course of the next six weeks, motorists may experience delays as they traverse these corridors. Motorists are therefore being advised to obey the posted warning signs and instructions of flag persons, when traversing these corridors.
