The National Works Agency (NWA) is advising motorists and pedestrians that the Gordon Town Bridge in St. Andrew will be closed by mid-day, this Wednesday, January 07. The single lane bridge which is nearly 100 years old is being closed to facilitate its demolition and replacement.

As a result of the closure of the old bridge, traffic will be re-routed onto a Bailey Bridge that has been erected parallel to the old structure. The single lane Bailey Bridge has been equipped with traffic signals to facilitate the safety of users. The relevant signs have also been posted at the location and road markings completed.

Construction of the new Gordon Town Bridge is slated to begin as soon as the demolition of the old bridge is completed. The new bridge is one of eleven being constructed across the island under the National Works Agency’s billion dollar R.A.Murray Priority Bridge Programme.

Construction of the new bridge is expected to be completed within five months at a cost of just under 88 million dollars.
