The National Works Agency (NWA) is advising motorists that persistent rainfall in St. Elizabeth during the past 72 hours has reduced several roadways to single lane usage and has left one impassable. Landslips have occurred along the Pisgah to Ginger Hill main road reducing several sections to single lane.

Two breakaways along the Red Gate to Wash Foot Gully roadway, in North Western St. Elizabeth, one in the vicinity of an area called Poor White’s Gate and the other in the vicinity of the Ginger Hill Primary School reduced this section of the roadway to single lane. Another section of this roadway has been partially blocked by a large boulder also reducing that section of the roadway to single lane. The Mocho to Springfield main road is also heavily scoured and sections reduced to single lane as well.

Meanwhile, in North Eastern St. Elizabeth, the Lilliput to Lookout main road was blocked by a massive boulder making it impassable. However, this roadway has been partially cleared and small units are now able to pass. The alternative route for drivers of large units travelling from the direction of Santa Cruz or Black River towards Lilliput is Balaclava to Keynsham, to Lookout onto Lilliput. The reverse obtains for drivers of large units travelling from Lilliput in the direction of Santa Cruz or Black River.

Heavy silting along the Lacovia to Mountain Side main road has been cleared and the Burnt Savannah Ford that was blocked by debris has also been opened. Weather permitting; the NWA will continue its efforts to have all roadways fully cleared by mid-week. The NWA is also advising motorists who use these roadways to proceed with extreme caution as the roads are slippery, obey posted warning signs and the instructions of flag persons.
