Impassable Roads

Heavy rains on Thursday afternoon has resulted in several roads being made impassable in the parishes of St. Catherine and St. Andrew, while several others in Kingston have been affected by flooding and heavy silt.

Manager of Communication and Customer Services at the National Works Agency (NWA), Stephen Shaw says heavy rains have affected 15 roadways in the three parishes. Six corridors are now impassable. In St. Catherine, the roadway from Tulloch to Zion Hill Bridge is now impassable. In St. Andrew, the corridors from Stony Hill to Parkes Road; Golden Spring toMount Airy; Papine to Redlight District, near Irish Town; Maryland to Woodford; Woodford to Norbrok and the road from Stony Hill to Toms River, which leads to the Junction in St. Mary are all blocked.

Other roads that have been affected by the heavy downpour are the stretch from Zion Hill Bridge to Freetown and Zion Hill Bridge to Parkes Road, both in St. Catherine. The corridor from Guava Ridge to Coopers Ridge in St. Andrew is now heavily silted, while debris and silt are affecting Old Stony Hill Road,Norbrook Drive and Orange Grove.

Mr. Shaw says teams from the Agency are now being mobilized to firstly re-open all the blocked roadways and then to carry out damage assessments on the corridors.

Mr. Shaw is also advising persons to exercise extreme caution in using corridors that are affected, especially by landslides. Several Fords in the Corporate Area are also now being affected by flooding. Motorists are being reminded that these Fords should not be traversed at this time.
