The National Works Agency is advising that a massive landslide has rendered impassable the main road from Williamsfield to Glengoffe in St. Catherine. The roadway is blocked in the community of Freedom.

Manager of Communication and Customer Services at the NWA,Stephen Shaw, says the agency has instructed a contractor to have the roadway cleared, however this will take some time, as the continous rainfall has made the hillside extremely unstable.

Motorists wishing to travel from Williamsfield to Glengoffe are being advised to use the alternative route through Harkers Hall and Long Hill.

In the meantime, Mr. Shaw says the NWA has cleared all the roadways in the parish of Hanover, which up to earlier today were affected by land slippages. Debris was also removed from the underside of the Lucea East andWest Rivers, as well as the Davis Cove River.

Mr. Shaw says the NWA is also continuing its efforts at clearing roadways and reopening critical drains in the parish of St. Thomas. In Clarendon, heavy rains have flooded roadways in several communities in the south. These include Lionel Town, Mitchell Town, Rocky Point, Longwood and Portland Cottage.

Mr. Shaw says teams from the NWA are currently on the ground assisting with the reopening of some critical channels, however the continuous rainfall and the low terrain are posing serious challenges to the effort.
