The National Works Agency is advising that another section of the main road leading from Wakefield to Hardwar Gap in Portland has become impassable, due to a landslide.

The roadway, which forms part of the Buff Bay Valley has a second major breakaway in the community of Cascade. A section of the same road in the community of Regale has also been significantly damaged and reduced to single lane access.

Manager of Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw says the damage is as a result of heavy rains that are currently impacting that section of the island.

The roadway from Wakefield to Hardwar Gap has been seriously affected by breakaways for the past three years. The NWA had identified 12 locations for emergency work.

Mr. Shaw says seven pieces of retaining walls valued at over 133 million dollars had already been constructed in the Valley. The NWA has identified three other locations along the road from Wakefield to Hardwar Gap for attention during this financial year.

These include the previous breakaway at Cascade and massive landslide in the community of Section.

In the meantime, Mr. Shaw is also advising motorists to be careful in using the roadway from Buff Bay to Balcares, as it is being constantly blocked by material from an unstable hillside. The roadway is being affected in the community of Old Station, between mile posts 35 and 36.

Mr. Shaw says heavy equipment has been positioned in the area and will continue to make the roadway passable to motorists.
