Motorists will later this week start using the new Yallahs River Bridge in St. Thomas, 12 months after the government commenced its construction through a contract valued at 402 million dollars.

Transport and Works Minister, Mike Henry following a tour of the project on Tuesday, announced that the new bridge would be opened for use by the public on Thursday, August 14, 2008. The bridge has been completed more than two months ahead of the October 31, contract deadline.

Minister Henry explained that the bridge was not being officially opened, but would be used by motorists in order to intensify river training works that are currently underway. The National Works Agency is in the process of training 300 meters of the river, up stream of the bridge. The existing Ford is upstream of the bridge and will be demolished to facilitate the river training activities.

Minister Henry said that other works relating to the bridge will be ongoing. This includes the completion of the approach roads. The roads are currently under construction and should be completed by the end of October.
