Multi-million dollar Bridge Construction underway in Smithfield, Westmoreland

The National Works Agency (NWA) is now moving to improve the corridor between Ferris and Savanna la mar in Westmoreland. The Agency is currently in the process of replacing the Stony Bridge, located in the community of Smithfield. This bridge has for years been a source of major concern, as it had been undermined overtime.

According to Community Realtions Officer at the NWA, Janel Ricketts the orginal structure has now been demolished to make way for the construction of the new bridge. A detour route has been created adjacent to the project site and is now in use by motorists.

She added that the new structure will have a wider alignment and will be equipped with sidewalks to ensure the safety of pedestrians. Additionally significant river training works will be undertaken.

Miss Ricketts says that the work being done on the Stony Bridge complements the 1.4 billion dollar Scotts Cove to Ferris road rehabilitation project. Under this project, several drains are being improved and the road surface repaired.

The Stony Bridge project is being executed at a cost of approximately $19 million dollars by local contractor D.R. Foote Construction Company Ltd.
