The National Works agency (NWA) is in the final stages of completion of a major project to rehabilitate a section of the main road in the vicinity of the Dollar View community in Irwin St. James. This main road falls along the stretch of roadway between Barnett and Adelphi in the parish.

A section of this roadway was eroded by the Montego River, following persistent flood rains in the area, last year.

The NWA says that this project, which is valued at approximately eleven million dollars ($11million), involves the construction of retaining and parapet walls and the reinstatement of the affected section of the roadway.

To date, the contractor has completed the construction of the Gabion retaining wall, which serves to stabilize and protect the area from being eroded by the Montego River. A Random Rubble Wall is now being built on top of this Gabion retaining wall.

Also in the Irwin community, the NWA is completing a drainage improvement project valued at approximately two point three million dollars ($2.3 million). The project involves the construction of a ‘U’ drain and catch basin, as well as the installation of a six hundred millimeter (600 mm) culvert and the reinstatement of the affected section of the roadway.

These projects are expected to be completed before the end of November 2009.
