
Effective Monday, August 25, 2025, the National Works Agency (NWA) will commission into service a new set of traffic signals in Portmore, St. Catherine. The new traffic signals have been installed at the intersection of George Lee Boulevard, Portmore Drive and Western Parade.
Manager, Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw says that the commissioning of the new set of signals will make it safer for road users to traverse this busy intersection. As part of the works, new turning lanes were added and paved sidewalks constructed.
Additionally, Mr. Shaw says that new overhead signals equipped with sensors, road markings and pedestrian facilities were all done under the contract valued at just over $18 - million.
The new traffic signals are slated to be officially commissioned into service at 10:00 am on Monday and come ahead of the official reopening of schools in September. The signalization of George Lee Boulevard/Portmore Drive/Western Parade intersection forms part of the NWA’s effort to manage the flow of traffic in the growing Portmore Municipality.
The work comes against the background of the $925 – million Grange Lane project and the upcoming Braeton to Naggos Head works, which is being done at a cost of over Two Billion Dollars.
