NWA advising that Tangle River Main Road in St. James has been closed

The National Works Agency (NWA) is advising that a section of the Tangle River main road in St. James has been closed effective today, Monday, May 18. The roadway roadway is closed approximately 300 meters from the Point square in St. James, which is located along the roadway between Point and Flamstead Gardens.

The NWA says this section of the roadway has been severely eroded as a result of persistent rains over the last forty eight hours (48 hrs) and has been closed to facilitate emergency repairs.

The alternative route for motorists travelling towards Flamstead Gardens from the direction of Point, is Maroon Town and then onto Flamstead Gardens while those travelling from the direction of Flamstead Gardens towards Point should travel through Maroon Town and then onto Point.

NWA officers and contractors have been dispatched to the area and are carrying out emergency repairs on the roadway which is expected to be reopened by Sunday May 24, 2009.

Work teams are also clearing landslips and wash down silt along the Flankers main road in the vicinity of the Montego Bay Island Traffic Authority Depot. Landslips have also been cleared along the Giguilsbro to Kensington main road in Southern St. James, however sections of this roadway is still reduced to single lane usage.

In Manchester, the Christiana to Alston main road has been reduced to single lane just outside the district of Alston while in Clarendon the following roads are reduced to single lane by landslips, Spalding’s to Cave Valley in the vicinity of Santa Hill, Danks to Mears Bridge and Danks to Croft’s Hill, Kupis to Colonel Ridge and Reckford to Pumpkin. The Crooked River main road which was blocked between Danks and Mears Bridge has been reopened.

The NWA is monitoring the parishes of Manchester and Clarendon which continues to experience intermittent rainfall. Work Teams will be dispatched to clear the affected roadways as soon the weather permits.

Motorists are advised to drive with caution along the affected roadways, obey the posted warning signs and the instructions of flag persons.
