The National Works Agency (NWA) has commenced another round of patching along major thoroughfares in the Kingston Metropolitan Region. Over the next month some 33 roadways in the KMR will be receiving attention.

These roadways include Barbican Road, Shortwood Road, Duhaney Drive, Waltham Park Road and Hagley Park Road in Kingston. In St. Andrew patching will be carried out along the Constant Spring to Stony Hill, Papine to Redlight, Redlight to Hardwar Gap and Nolan Hill to Border roadways. Among the corridors in St. Catherine that will be targeted are Barry to Bog Walk, Bog Walk to Ewarton and Sligoville to Spanish Town main roads.

Patching of these roadways is expected to be completed in September. The programme is being undertaken by NWA Force Account Teams, funded by the Road Maintenance Fund and will cost just under $21 million.

In the meantime the NWA is carrying out River Training works along a section of the Rio Cobre in St. Catherine. The works are being carried out adjacent to the Soapberry Sewage Treatment Plant. Flood waters from the Rio Cobre have in recent times threatened the facility. These works will prevent damage to the treatment plant whenever the river is in spate.

The works include re-channeling the river and construction of 400 feet of Bunds along the river bank. This project is being undertaken by one of the NWA’s Force Account Teams and is expected to be completed within six months.
