NWA to close Graham Close Roadway in St. Andrew

The National Works Agency (NWA) is advising the public that the Graham Close roadway in Upper St. Andrew, will be closed effective tomorrow Wednesday November 19, until further notice.

Continued use of this roadway, according to the NWA, is unsafe for motorists and personnel at the site of a Retaining Wall being constructed at a breakaway along the roadway. The section of roadway broke away during the passage of Tropical Storm Gustav in August.

Continuous rainfall during the past 72 hours has resulted in further deterioration and erosion along the corridor. Chin’s Construction Company was awarded a $16.2 million contract to undertake the construction works which is expected to be completed within 3 months.

Graham Close connects Graham Heights Road and Cherry Drive, in Cherry Garden’s.

In the meantime, teams from the NWA are now reopening some roadways in western Jamaica, that were earlier today blocked resulting from heavy rainfall.

The NWA is reporting that the Fairfield to Point and the Barrett to Adelphi main roads in St. James are now open to single lane traffic. Both roadways were blocked by flood waters, landslides and debris. The NWA is also advising that the flood waters have receded from the Cambridge to Montpelier and Anchovy to Settlement main roads.

In Trelawny the roadway from Jackson Town to Ulster Spring is now inundated in the community of Level Bottom. The flood waters have however receded on the roadway from Falmouth to Springvale and Salt Marsh to Kent. Motorists are however being warned to proceed with caution.
