NWA establishes alternate routes for blocked roads in St. Mary

The National Works Agency (NWA) is advising the public that alternate routes have been established for four of the seven main roads in St. Mary that have been blocked as a result of heavy rains last week.

The corridors from Islington to Martins, Martins to Rosend, Montreal to Top Derry, Langley to Boynes Park, Port Maria to Oxford, Union Hill to Oracabessa and Lucky Hill to Hallifax Bridge have been rendered impassable, since last week Tuesday. Sections of these roads have either collapsed or broken away, resulting from the heavy rains.

Manager of Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw says motorists traveling along the roadways from Islington to Martins and Martins to Rosend can now travel through the communities of Albany, Water Valley, then on to Islington. Persons wishing to travel to communities along the roadway from Montreal to Top Derry can use the alternate route through Lovers Lane, while the Free Hill roadway can be used to access the corridor from Port Maria to Oxford.

Mr. Shaw says that the NWA is working to have the other corridors that are still impassable in St. Mary reopened as soon as possible. He also says special attention is being paid to the Rio Grande Valley in Portland, a section of which is now inaccessible by motor vehicles.

Mr. Shaw says that other roads in the two parishes that were affected by landslips, scouring or debris are now being fully reopened or temporarily reinstated
