THE National Works Agency (NWA) plans to relieve traffic congestion in New Kingston through a number of new measures it will be implementing starting tomorrow.

Through the installation of new traffic signals, parking restrictions and directional changes it aims to improve intersection safety and “provide congestion relief along the main corridors”.

Three new traffic signals are being put into service at Knutsford Boulevard/Grenada Crescent, Knutsford Boulevard/Barbados Avenue and Knutsford Boulevard/Trinidad Terrace, the NWA said.

Thursday’s meeting of the Roads and Traffic Committee of the Kingston and St Andrew Corporation (KSAC) was informed of the new traffic measures through a letter sent by the NWA to City Engineer Norman Shand on April 4.
The NWA said that parking restrictions will be enforced Monday through Friday between the hours of 6:00 am and 7:00 pm in the following areas:

  • Grenada Crescent from Dominica Drive to St Lucia Avenue;
  • Barbados Avenue from Grenada Crescent to St Lucia Avenue;
  • Trinidad Terrace from Grenada Crescent to Altamont Crescent; and
  • Dominica Drive from Grenada Crescent to Knutsford Boulevard.

A number of directional changes will also be implemented in conjunction with the new signals and parking restrictions.

As of tomorrow, vehicles will not be allowed to access Trinidad Terrace from Altamont Crescent and the current oneway between Knutsford Boulevard and St Lucia Avenue will be extended to Altamont Crescent, the NWA said.

Also to be converted to bidirectional (two-way) traffic flow tomorrow will be the current one-way section of Dominica Drive from Knutsford Boulevard to Grenada Crescent.

The NWA said that right turns will be restricted at all times from Knutsford Boulevard into Dominica Drive and from Dominica Drive onto Knutsford Boulevard.
