The National Works Agency (NWA) has reopened all but one of the over 35 main roads that were impacted by heavy rains between Wednesday and Saturday of last week. The heavy rains affected the parishes of St. Thomas, Portland, St. Andrew, Kingston, St. Mary and St. James.

Among the corridors that were reopened at the weekend are the Bog Walk Gorge main road in St. Catherine and the Junction road in St. Mary. The Gorge main road was slightly damaged on Thursday, after the Rio Cobre overflowed its banks onto the roadway. The Junction road was blocked by landslides in the community of Friendship Gap.

The main road linking the communities of Hagley’s Gap and Mahagony Vale in St. Thomas is still impassable. The roadway is connected via a Ford, which has been significantly damaged. A team from the NWA started working on the facility on Sunday and it is hoped that the roadway will be reopened before the end of Monday, weather permitting.

In the meantime, the NWA is continuing with its efforts at reopening drains that have been clogged resulting from the rainfall. Several parrarel and other drains have been blocked resulting from the rains.
