Hurricane Dean damage

The National Works Agency, following the passage of Hurricane Dean on Sunday August 19, 2007 has restored access to over 95% of the 446 roadways islandwide, that were blocked by fallen trees, debris, washed down silt and landslips.

Of the 426 roads re-opened, full access has been restored to 314 or 70% while 112 or 25% have been cleared to single lane access. Twenty roads remain closed and the NWA and contractors are working to have these re-opened.

In St. Elizabeth the Goshen main road is blocked by utility poles. The alternative route is Goshen Block Factory Road to School Road and onto the Goshen main road. A breakaway in the vicinity of Redgate along the Washfoot Gully main road has reduced the roadway to single lane usage. The NWA is advising that only motorists driving small vehicles use this roadway and they should proceed with extreme caution.

The Yallahs Ford at Poorman’s in western St. Thomas remains impassable. Motorists traveling towards Morant Bay, should use the alternative route through Easington, while motorists using the Palisadoes main road should proceed with caution as there is still loose sand on this roadway.
