The National Works Agency (NWA) is now undertaking preparatory works for the the construction of a new bridge at Alligator Church in the Rio Grande Valley, Portland. The current bridge which is over 90 years old is being replaced under the billion dollar, R. A. Murray Bridge Programme.

Manager of Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw, says the existing bridge will be replaced with a Bailey Bridge, following the construction of abutments and a centre pier.

He says that traffic on the existing structure will shortly be restricted to prevent it from being compromised.

In the meantime, the NWA has commenced a programme of works along several roadways elsewhere in Portland. Over the next five weeks, the corridors from Folly to Fair Prospect, Spring Gardens to Chepstowe, Schoolhouse Corner to Chepstowe and Hectors River to Muirton will be patched as part of a new works programme. The roadway from Swift River to Mount Herman will also be patched.

The programme which is part of the NWA’s island-wide road patching effort is being executed in Portland at a cost of just under 1.5 million dollars. Aproximately 2,150 square meters of roadway will be targeted.
