The National Works Agency (NWA) is now undertaking works valued at nearly $100 million, as it seeks to make corridors safer for road users. Road marking works are now underway in the three parishes, while works are to begin in a fourth parish.

Manager, Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw says that works are to remark edge and centre lines, as well the installation of Raised Pavement Markers, otherwise called “Cats Eyes” are underway in the parishes of St. Catherine, St. Mary and Portland.

The St. Catherine works are being done through two contract packages valued at just under $29 – million. The roads being targeted under these packages are Port Henderson Road, Dyke Road, Grange Lane, Lakes Pen Road and George Lee Boulevard. Mr. Shaw says that with the exception of the installation of turning arrows and pedestrian cross walks along Geroge Lee Boulevard, these projects in St. Catherine are complete.

Works are also taking place along the main road from the Robert Schuman Round – a -bout in St. Mary to Hart Hill, Portland. Edge lines, centre lines and Raised Pavement Markers are being replaced. This project valued at $29 – million dollars is now 50% complete.

Mr. Shaw says that work is to begin this week along the main road from White Hall to Port Maria in St. Mary. These works are to be done at a cost of $18.5 – million. Works are also to be done along the Salem main road in St. Ann. A contract valued at $18.3 million has been signed for these works.

Mr. Shaw says that this road safety initiative is to complement other road improvement efforts now underway through the Maintenance of Secondary Roads Programme, the $1.7 – billion GO Rehabilitation Programme and the Capital Expenditure Works Programme.
