The National Works Agency (NWA) has commenced work on a protective wall in the vicinity of the Black River Hospital in St. Elizabeth. The wall which is being built on the sea-side of the hospital, comes against the background of significant damage by wave action, resulting in the parish’s premier health facility being threatened.
Manager of Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw says damage to the wall dated back to the passage of Hurricane Ivan in 2005. In 2008, wave action associated with the passage of Tropical Storm Gustav did further damage.
Mr. Shaw says the project which is being undertaken through the Jamaica Development Infrastructure Programme (JDIP) is currently some 60 per cent complete and is expected to be completed in the last quarter of this year, at a cost of over 20 million dollars.
