River Training

The National Works Agency (NWA) will, this Thursday (tomorrow) resume its desilting activity within the Yallahs River, in Albion, St. Thomas. This activity which had begun in August of last year was suspended due to a rise in water levels within the river channel following the passage of Hurricane Gustav. The desilting activity is now expected to be completed by the end of January to facilitate training of the river.

According to the NWA, river training works will include the removal of 130,000 cubic meters of sand, silt and other materials from the river. Bunding works will be carried out on 300 metres of the channel upstream of the bridge. This aspect of the work is expected to commence next month.

The Bunding work is expected to be completed within four (4) months of commencement and is geared at improving the water flow in the channel as well as reducing the probability of flooding. The works form part of the NWA’s 2007 Atlantic Hurricane Flood Damage Programme, funded by the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB).

Other areas being targeted under this programme are: the Roselle andGeorgia main roads, in St. Thomas; the Spanish Town to Bog Walk main road in St. Catherine; and Muirton to Fair Prospect main road in Portland.
