The National Works Agency is advising that a number of road sections along the island’s main road network are still impassable, following last week’s heavy rains which accompanied Tropical Storm Gustav.

Communications and Customer Services Manager at the NWA, Stephen Shaw, reports that approximately twenty main roads in five parishes remain inaccessible to vehicular traffic. In St. Andrew: The Parkes to Rock Hall main road is still blocked by a massive boulder, so too the Papine to Redlight main road, between New Castle and Redlight which is blocked due to landslides. In St. Catherine: the Williamsfield to Glengoffe, Williamsfield to Gobay, Seafield to Peartree Grove, Sports Park to Coast Road and Sports Park to Troja main roads are impassable. The Bog Walk Gorge which has sustained extensive damage to the roadway and approach to the Bridge is also inaccessible. In St. Thomas: The Bachelor’s Hall to Spring Bank, Belvedere to Hall Head, Bethel Gap to Whiteford, Hagley Gap, Mount Sinai to Loop Road, White Hall to Hillside and Windsor Forrest to Arntully main roads are impassable. In St. Mary, The Border to Cuffy Gully main road has a huge breakaway in the vicinity of Jones Rock, preventing vehicular passage. The Chovey to Claremont main road is also blocked. InPorland: Breakaways at three sections along the Cascade main road has rendered the roadway impassable and in Clarendon: the Nine Turn to Riches main road is also inaccessible.

Mr. Shaw also advises that there are approximately forty-two parochial roads in these parishes which remain inaccessible. He advises that the NWA is working to re-open most of the affected roads by Sunday (September 7), weather permitting.
