Traffic changes for Marcus Garvey Drive

Effective Monday February 19, 2007 the National Works Agency will be introducing traffic changes along Marcus Garvey Drive in Kingston. The changes are being made in response to complaints by motorists regarding the unacceptably high levels of delays they have been experiencing along this roadway following the opening of the Portmore Toll Road in July of 2006.

Manager of Communication and Customer Services at the National Works Agency, Stephen Shaw says there will be uninterrupted traffic flow for motorists travelling in the east bound lane along Marcus Garvey Drive between the Portmore Toll Road Off Ramp and downtown Kingston. He says no right turn will be allowed at 9th Avenue, East Avenue, Industrial Terrace, Seprod Limited and Petrojam Limited between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. during week days.

Mr. Shaw says right turns will be allowed at 4th Avenue for those vehicles heading downtown from the 4th Avenue complex. Vehicles exiting the toll road between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. will not be allowed to turn right along Marcus Garvey Drive. Instead they will travel to Water Lane, then back along the west bound lane to their various exit points. He says new road markings and signs have been installed to advise motorists of the changes.

These changes, introduced by the NWA, will allow free movement along the east bound lane of Marcus Garvey Drive and reduce interruption to the main traffic flow at intersections.
