Motorists are being advised that the traffic signals at the intersection of Ocho Rios Bypass and Evelyn Street intersection will be temporarily out of service this weekend. The signals will not be available between 7:00 a.m on Saturday, August 8 and 5:00 p.m on August 9, 2026.
Manager, Communication and Customer Services at the National Works Agency (NWA), Stephen Shaw says that the system is being taken offline in order to commission into service an upgraded traffic signal infrastructure. The new system has been completed at a cost of just under 17.5 – million dollars.
Mr. Shaw explains that the project addresses critical infrastructure defects that previously compromised safety at the dualized intersection. The signals had been operating on an aging infrastructure, with damaged pole foundations resulting in missing signal and pedestrian indications.
He notes that through the multi-million-dollar project modern mast-arm poles have been installed, pedestrian facilities upgraded, multi-directional signal heads installed and new underground ducts laid. The electrical power service infrastructure has also been improved and road markings installed.
Mr. Shaw says that among the benefits of this upgraded system will be improve traffic flow, enhance approach visibility for motorists and safer crossing facilities for pedestrians.
During the transition period between Saturday and Sunday, road users are being urged to exercise caution when navigating the space. The new signals are expected to be operational by 5:00 p.m on Sunday.
