Washington Boulevard to be closed for repairs to Rochester Gully Bridge

A section of Washington Boulevard, in the vicinity of the Rubis gas station at Ziadie Gardens, will be closed commencing tomorrow, Saturday August 29. The closure, which will start at 7:00 p.m., will continue until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Manager of Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw, says that the closure is to facilitate repairs to the Rochester Gully Bridge which makes loud noises when driven over, suggesting that some of its parts have surpassed the loading weight and design life. This, he says, may be attributed to the excessive loading of large vehicles which stresses the infrastructure. He says that over the course of the next two weekends, from Saturday evening to Sunday afternoon, the deck plates of the bridge will be removed to facilitate the replacement of these parts.

Mr. Shaw further states that the works will be undertaken one direction at a time on each weekend. As such, between August 29 and 30, the westbound lanes (heading towards Six Miles) of Washington Boulevard, in the vicinity of the bridge, will be closed to vehicular traffic. Westbound traffic will be diverted at Savanna Road onto one lane of the eastbound carriageway. Similar arrangements will be in place, on September 5 and 6, for eastbound traffic (towards Red Hills Road) which will be diverted at Cowper Drive onto one lane of the westbound carriageway.

During the period of closure, motorists are being advised to exercise caution in the vicinity of the works and to obey the instructions of posted warning signs.
