Water rising in New Market, road closed

The National Works Agency (NWA) is advising that rising waters in the community of New Market, St. Elizabeth has resulted in the main road leading to Carmel, Westmoreland being impassable.

The main road is being blocked by the rising waters of the Two Sister Pond in the community.

Manager of Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw says motorists wishing to travel towards Darliston, through Carmel, should use the alternative route through Kilmarnock.

He says the NWA will be erecting signs along the roadway to assist persons along the route, which is a parochial road. Against this background, Mr. Shaw says operators of large vehicles should not attempt to use the route through Kilmarnock, but instead use one of the other alternative routes.

Operators of large vehicles may use the road from New Market, through Leamington to get to Darliston.

In the meantime, Mr. Shaw is warning motorists not to attempt to use the flooded roadway.
