Minister with responsibility for Works in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Infrastructure Development (MEGID), Robert Nesta Morgan has instructed that immediate steps be taken to mitigate flooding in the town of Lucea, Hanover. The instruction to the National Works Agency (NWA) comes after persistent rainfall over the last 24 hours resulted in the Riley River overflowing onto the main road leading into and out of the parish capital.

Based on checks by the NWA’s technical team, a heavy deposit of bamboo in front of and beneath the bridge was a major contributor to the flooding. The NWA is to move immediately to have the area in the vicinity of the bridge cleared of the deposits.

It is expected that the impediments will be removed as quickly as possible, without endangering the lives of anyone. Sections of western parishes, including Hanover, have been experiencing heavy rainfall over the last week. The rains have also caused damage to infrastructure in the parish. A section of the main road from Green Island to Glasgow collapsed on Thursday night, during heavy rainfall.

Resulting from the collapsed roadway, motorists cannot traverse the road through the community of Kendal.

Minister Morgan has also directed the NWA to review the situation along this corridor with a view to carrying out temporary work to facilitate its reopening. This is to be done against the background of the challenges being experienced by persons who now have to take the much longer route through Riley, Kingsvale and Prospect.
