Slow recovery as PM tours St. Ann

PRIME Minister Bruce Golding toured sections of St Ann yesterday to view damage done by flooding and mudslide from Wednesday night’s heavy rains, as life in the resort town of Ocho Rios and its environs slowly began returning to normal.

Recovery efforts were hampered by continuing intermittent showers that became heavy at times. However, business persons continued clean-up efforts and started counting their losses.

Persons dislocated by flood waters in surrounding communities, including Parry Town, Snow Hill and other areas, began picking up the pieces, as weather experts forecast more showers.

President of the St Ann Chamber of Commerce, Norma Walters, said there was still no estimate of the losses sustained by businesses along the affected section of Main Street as persons were busy trying to clean up the mess.

Main Street remained blocked to vehicular and pedestrian traffic up to 5:00 pm yesterday as several inches of mud remained on the road surface and drains remained blocked.

Workmen from the fire department and the National Works Agency, assisted by Pihl Construction, were working up to late evening to remedy the situation.

Here, Golding is seen making his way through thick mud in the resort town.
