The National Works Agency (NWA) has installed and activated a new traffic signal at the intersection of the Barnett Tech Park and the Fairfield main road in St. James. This represents a joint effort by the NWA and Barnett Limited and comes amid growing concerns regarding the safety of road users who traverse this intersection.
The Barnett Tech Park houses several Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) companies and other commercial entities, which sees thousands of persons entering and exiting the complex daily. There have been a number of accidents in the vicinity of the entrance to the development as motorists navigate the heavily used Fairfield main road.
NWA Community Relations Officer, Janel Ricketts, says traffic at this intersection has grown significantly overtime, as the Tech Park expands and more traffic is drawn to the Fairfield main road, with and increase in residential developments such as Cashew Grove and the Estuary Housing Scheme.
Ms Ricketts says that the signal will not only better regulate the flow of traffic at the intersection, but will also improve pedestrian safety, by separating vehicular and pedestrian movement. Pedestrians will now be able to activate the pedestrian signal, through a push-button activated system, which will indicate when it is safe to cross. Pedestrians are encouraged to make use of this feature.
The signals were installed at a cost of approximately $18.4 million.
