The National Works Agency (NWA) is advising motorists that the intersection of Main Street, Coke Drive, and Institution Drive in Santa Cruz, St. Elizabeth, will be closed on Sunday, May 17, 2026, from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to facilitate urgent utility repairs.
Manager, Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw says that the closure is necessary for the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPSCo.) to safely re-align leaning utility poles that pose a risk to both motorists and pedestrians.
Mr. Shaw notes that while the intersection will be closed to through traffic during the work period, all local businesses will remain accessible to the public.
Motorists are strongly encouraged to use the Santa Cruz Bypass to avoid delays. Those navigating the town center must follow the established detours.
Westbound motorists are advised to turn right onto Institution Drive at the GASmart service station, then left onto New River Road to access Main Street. Eastbound motorists are advised to turn left onto New River Road at the traffic signal, then right onto Institution Drive to return to Main Street at the GASmart service station. Additionally, motorists traveling north along Coke Drive should turn left onto Vanderville Drive and then right onto Retirement Road to access Main Street.
The NWA and JPSCo. aim to complete these critical repairs within the scheduled timeframe to minimize disruption to the electrical grid and local traffic. Road users are encouraged to exercise extreme caution, follow the instructions of flagmen, and be mindful of personnel working near the roadway.
